Last week I invited readers to ask me a question, not just any question, but a Rockstar Question.
Kari Burch, a writer, artist and coach, took up the challenge. This is what she wrote:
Can I Include My Diverse Interests in My Business?
I am currently rebirthing my coaching business, in co-creation with my biz partner.
In the past, I have felt stressed by/frustrated by pivoting the focus of my business. I’m a reflector and I am always changing + it’s important for me to be able to follow what’s real for me, even if it’s different than what I built yesterday.
The reason I am worried about shifting/pivoting is bc I worry that I won’t be able to “build” if what I’m building is always changing form.
How i am addressing right now:
Well, for one I’m partnering with someone for the first time. She is a projector and we are developing common goals /priorities. So in a sense I have more built in structure to keep going.
We are also changing the structure of what we are offering, so we will be offering monthly workshops, toward which I can channel my creativity and changing interests into a helpful offering.
I am hopeful that this will solve my “worry” about changing too much, though I also recognize it’s optional to think that always changing is detrimental.
I am curious what you might say to someone who wants to follow their interests but also build some sort of body of work/business.
And this is my answer…
I hear so much wisdom in your words, Kari.
- You know it’s important to follow what’s real for you.
- You’re recognizing the need for some structure and are taking actions to create it (partnering, switching to workshops)
- You’ve noticed that thinking, “Always changing is detrimental,” is optional! 🤯
The first thing I’m led to do in answering your question is to point out what you’ve already got going for you, and how alive that inner guidance is in you. (See the bullets above for evidence.)
I am curious what you might say to someone who wants to follow their interests but also build some sort of body of work/business.
Why wouldn’t you follow your interests and include them in your business? It sounds delightful!
Since you get to make up your business however you like, it’s also 100% available as a choice.
As you follow your interests and create, you will inevitably build your body of work. You’ll discover more about what you and how you do it, in the process.
If you need more structure or focus, you’ll discover that as you go, too. It’s already happening.
Will there be a learning curve? Absolutely. Will you need to try a bunch of stuff, some of which won’t work? Very likely.
But at each step of the way, wisdom will be guiding you as common sense, a “gut feeling,” or ideas that draw and inspire.
You get to follow your interests and discover how to play with them to serve your experience and meet your needs. With wisdom as your guide, and knowing that detrimental thinking is always optional, you are unstoppable.
