Doing business the way the experts say it’s supposed to be done, instead of your way, can lead you to a place where something just feels off.
Even when it’s “working.” That’s how you know.
It’s tempting to follow the rules, chasing system after proven system.
Despite seeing this myself for years, I fell for it. Again.
The universe sent exactly what was needed to get me back into creation mode.
Get clear. Be more specific, it said.
So I did.
I created a specific offer for the people I’d most love to help…and immediately felt something was off.
I was seduced by the promise of, “Do it this way and you’ll never have to doubt yourself again.”
Of course, that’s enticing!
Someone promises me results, pointing to their own. Why wouldn’t I want to take it?
But every time I turn it into a prescription, my life becomes constrictive and “not-me” again.
Living by the rules just isn’t my way anymore.
I can try them. I can test them out, but I’m no longer willing to ignore where it doesn’t fit what’s happening through me and my business right now.
Sometimes it feels like it sucks. I get to revise my copy and change my “public opinion” to come back into alignment. (Which is what I’m doing right now, by the way.)
Don’t believe me, or anyone. Look inside and see for yourself.
Trust that. Believe THAT.
The fact that I’ll be revising this again and again won’t keep me from sharing. It’s not a mistake; it’s how we evolve.
Here’s how it looks to me right now, which I’m sharing unabashedly, knowing that it may look different tomorrow:
If you’re not creating what you desire in your business right now, and if you don’t see the results you’d like, clarity and focused intention will help.
But it might not look like what Business-As-Usual judges to be “clear and focused.”
You don’t have to focus on your “One Thing.” (Unless you want to.)
You don’t have to target your customer avatar down to their age, hobbies and how often they use the bathroom. (But you can.)
You don’t have to create an offer focused on tangible outcomes and results. (Unless it feels right.)
You get to follow the aliveness stirring within you and express it through your business according to your desire.
It often starts with curiosity, for me.
“I wonder what would happen if…?”
It might be sparked by frustration.
“Damn, I don’t feel like posting content every day. What else could I do?”
Sometimes I find myself doing something with no reason at all, like signing up for a 21 day manifestation challenge when that is clearly not my thing.
This is the path of un-marketing your business, letting go of the need to follow the rules, and giving yourself permission to follow what you know instead.
If I want to be led by my intuition and inspiration, it means pioneering another way, which may or may not work out the way I think.
The secret (if there is one) is non-attachment. A willingness to drop what I knew yesterday and listen for something fresh.
“What’s happening through me now? How is my business expressing itself now?”
When I meet with client-playmates, that’s what I’m feeling for. That’s the game we’re playing.
What’s alive for you NOW?
Not last year. Not yesterday.
Now.
Is the aliveness asking for more consistency and focus?
Is it asking for spontaneity and play?
Would it like to throw out the rules entirely, or go back to playing within them?
Removing the “have to” frees us up to choose what’s aligned in the moment.
It’s always more ALIVE than sticking with something because it’s what I’m “supposed” to do.
It doesn’t come from figuring it out or knowing what the outcome will be.
If I keep heading in the direction of what I want, and redirecting as guided, I’ll get closer and closer. That much is certain.
