Healers, wellness practitioners and body workers are some of the entrepreneurs I find most inspiring. So when one of them shows up in my YouTube feed, I pay attention!
Mitch Hash at The Art of Opening has a heartfelt conversation with me about showing up with the body, yourself and life. It’s a practical and spiritual exploration of opening and finding enjoyment.
Here’s some of what we explored:
- Mitch’s journey of healing a hip impingement and extreme stiffness through opening the body, mind and emotions
- The Spiritual journey of letting go and finding god in the body
- Relaxation as a spiritual path
- How to heal the body on a deep level

How to Heal by Letting Go
Mitch’s story of opening his body began with the physical, and unfolded as a spiritual journey. His original intention was to engage in dance and gymnastics, but he was unable to do it because of stiffness. The concept of “opening” expanded to involve the mind, spirit and emotions.
“We can save our own lives, way more than we even know. We have so much power.” – Mitch Hash
The body wants to move, but not by being pushed. Our first responsibility is to be with it and feel it. Opening comes from this present awareness and letting go.
Clinging creates tension in the mind and the body. Attachment is what causes suffering. We cling to people, ideas, our identity. It is letting go of these attachments and the need to control that brings openness to the body.
It drains energy trying to control to make things okay; the truth is we’re okay 99% of the time. We often don’t know we’re creating tension, but our bodies can feel it.
“If you learn to let go in your mind, you learn to let go in your body.” Mitch Hash
Letting go can feel like losing, but in reality, it’s just being. It isn’t something you “do.” Letting go will make your life more colorful and fruitful, but can feel hard.
Mitch describes a powerful psychedelic experience of what’s known as “ego death.” Everything he loved fell away, and he felt alone and scared. Then he noticed, “I’m still here.” What’s left when everything falls away is you. He felt the grief of letting go, and knew he was okay.
Knowing we’re okay isn’t a panacea; it’s healing. It reminds us that “okay” is possible. Every feeling eventually shifts to relief and you feel better.
Meet Mitch Hash
Mitch’s mission is to be a source of healing in the world — to be present for those who are ready to initiate the deeper work of coming back to oneself. He works with individuals with extreme body stiffness and chronic pain via stretching, relaxation, and exercise.
Mitch does this work solely because of the profound impact it has had on his life experientially. He has overcome high anxiety, depression, a hip impingement (frozen hip), all with the work that he now teaches. He is humbled and grateful to do this and to keep learning in this realm.
