This question came in from a reader:

“What are the best ways to earn consistent income, have fun, stay organized and relaxed while doing it?”

I love the intention behind this question to make a living by enjoying it – yahoo! 🎉 – but there’s one word in this question that troubles me. Can you guess which one it is?

BEST.

They’re looking for the “best ways,” and behind that little phrase lurks an ugly Thought Dragon that keeps so many of us paralyzed or spinning like a hamster on a wheel.

It’s a thought that says there is a “good” way and a “bad” way, a “right” way to do it and a “wrong” way to do it.

“Tell me the BEST ways so that I know I’m doing the right thing!”

You can waste an awful lot of time chasing the “right” choice because it doesn’t exist.

I’m one of those weird people who don’t see the world in black and white. Perspectives are infinite and meaning is entirely made up.

How would you know if a choice is “right” or “wrong,” anyway?

Seeking the “right way”is an attempt to predict the future (and I’ve yet to meet anyone who can do this) in order to know if the choice will work out or not.

If it goes well, it must have been “right.” If it goes to hell in a handbasket, we judge it as “wrong.”

The idea of “right” and “wrong” is a judgement, which means it’s a thought, and that means it doesn’t really exist.

A thought that something is “right” or “wrong” can be felt, but it isn’t a real thing. In fact, it’s so subjective that you will find radically different opinions about the exact same topic. War, taxes, the presidential election. 😬 (Opinions are thoughts, too!)

The person asking this question is looking for the “best ways” to create income because they want a guarantee that what they do will work, reassurance against the uncertainty of a future we can’t predict, and a mind that demands we avoid anything risky or uncertain.

They spend all their time trying to figure out the “right” ways to make income (and how to avoid all the “wrong” ways) instead of taking actions that actually might create income to find out.

If you knew that “right” and “wrong” choices didn’t exist, what would you choose?

The good news (ha!) is that even though you can’t make a right or wrong decision, you have a built-in navigation system as a guide. It’s like an internal compass pointing to your next action.

Unlike your intellect, your inner compass doesn’t mess around with definitions of right and wrong. It simply knows.

Some people call it intuition. Others call it common sense or intelligence. I usually refer to it as your inner guidance or wisdom.

Whatever you call it, I know you’ve experienced it in the times you just knew what to do.

This guidance exists beyond the intellect and reason, and it’s much, much more reliable.

If you’d like to get more acquainted with your inner guidance and what it has to say about the direction and focus for your life, join us for REFLECT: Rediscover Joyful Direction, Focus and Ease.
