Every week I search for a quote to put in my Weekly Wildspire email. Last week this one found me:

“Tradition is nothing but ancestral peer pressure.” – Indya Moore

This quote is appealing because it thumbs its nose at tradition and give permission to ignore it as desired.

What is tradition, really?

A bunch of beliefs about how things should be done, passed down over time. (Thought.)

What is peer pressure, really?

Influence from peers – which is only an issues if I care what they think. (Thought.)

What is a problem, really?

A situation believed to be unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with. While the situation or circumstance may be real, the judgement (Thought) of it as “unwelcome or harmful” is a story.

This morning I found myself struggling with a “problem.”

My thoughts were tangled up in what I’d done wrong and trying to figure out what to do differently.

When something looks complicated, I know I have a Thought Problem.

So I sent a voice message to my coach, rambling about the “problem,” mostly just to hear myself think, and suddenly I hear myself saying:

Every problem is solved by not thinking about it.

I burst out laughing.

My “problem” instantly disappears the moment I stop thinking about it.

Now the other person doesn’t disappear, and neither do I, but it can’t be an actual problem if I don’t THINK it up as one.

Now in case it seems like I’m making a case for denial – let me clarify.

Every problem instantly disappears with the thought that says, “This is a problem.” Quite literally, if you can’t think “problem,” it disappears and as such, your problem is solved.

I don’t advocate putting your head in the sand or ignoring the very real life challenges and obstacles you may be facing.

But thinking about it as “a problem” is what actually creates the feeling of it as a problem. It can even feel real enough to tie your stomach in knots and keep you up at night.

There’s a second way “Every problem is solved by not thinking about it,” is true, and this may be even more helpful to recognize.

When your mind is clear and quiet, the resolution for your problem often arises without trying. There’s space for wisdom to be heard because you’re not listening to the alarm bells going off in your head about the “problem.”

Even if the solution doesn’t occur to you immediately, the space without thinking is so peaceful that it provides relief from the problem without changing a thing.

We’re such adorable, bumbling little humans, inventing problems for ourselves to solve.

What if we remembered just how powerful we are as creators?
